5 Plant Care Basics Every Beginner Should Know
Starting your first indoor garden? It's easier than you think. The plants in this little arrangement — a monstera, fern, basil, and a couple of succulents — cover almost every corner of beginner-friendly plant care. Here's what you actually need to know.
1. Match the plant to your light

Before buying anything, look at where you'll keep it. Bright, indirect light suits most indoor plants like monstera and ferns. Sunny balconies are perfect for basil, tulsi, and succulents. Low-light corners? Stick to snake plants or pothos. Putting a sun-loving plant in a dark room is the fastest way to lose it.
More plants die from too much water than too little. Stick your finger an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, water. If it's still damp, wait a day or two. Succulents need water roughly once a week, ferns prefer consistent moisture, and most flowering plants sit somewhere in between.
3. Get the soil right
Regular garden soil compacts in pots and suffocates roots. Use a proper potting mix that drains well and stays light. Adding cocopeat improves moisture retention, while perlite keeps things airy. A monthly top-up of vermicompost feeds your plants gently without burning the roots.
4. Choose pots with drainage

Every pot needs a hole at the bottom. No exceptions. Without drainage, water pools at the base and rots the roots. Handpainted ceramic planters look stunning on a balcony or windowsill — just make sure they're functional too.
5. Be patient
Plants don't grow on your schedule. Some take weeks to settle in, and that's normal. Stick to consistent care, and you'll see new leaves before you know it.
